Okay, so now you have determined that you would like to put an ADU in your backyard, you already know that ADU means an Additional Dwelling Unit. Due to the housing crisis California has loosened the laws on making the ADU’s but still each city has it’s own measures, just to get started somewhere, we start with the city of Fremont

The equation is, that you cannot exceed 50% of your existing HABITABLE SQUARE FOOTAGE .

Another part of the equation is that you cannot exceed 40% of lot coverage, that includes everything with a roof and walls-house, garage, sheds, patio enclosure, etc.

There are no setback requirements though. These were the requirements of the City of Fremont, I will put up other cities, in my future posts.
